My fav part of cross-stitching

Someone gave away an old computer desk. I snatched it up for my sewing table. I had been using our computer desk but soon, I’ll be replacing the hard drive and getting the desktop back up and running so I knew that was only a temporary solution. I love it. I can set up the ironing board beside it and go to town on my sewing projects.

My mom found some cute cross-stitch patterns that I will be using for miscellaneous projects. When I looked in my cross-stitch box, I found this project that I started several years ago. If Mama and I ever opened a quilt shop, I think Blueberry House Quilts is the perfect name! I’ve finished all the stitching but I still have the outlining to do. I LOVE outlining because it really makes the picture come to life.

In the past, I’ve gotten cross-stitch pieces matted and framed. This time, I think I will put two rows of strips around the piece to make a Log cabin quilt style wall hanging. This is a result of necessity. Two of my mom’s cross-stitch pieces that I have on my walls have fallen and had the glass shattered. I’ve been intending on buying new frames but I think piecing them into wall hangings will not only be a fun project. It will also be the more economical choice. And I don’t have to worry about glass breaking. Win, Win!

I love my baby {bibs}

Well…..these took a lot less time for me to finish than I thought. I’ve been having false contractions for a week or so now. The past couple of days, have had some strong ones and pressure so I have been forced to slow down drastically. Just hoping this is not the prediction for the next three months. At least I have things that I can do while I’m taking it easy. I’d probably go stark-raving mad without cross stitch and crochet to keep me busy.

A day full of special things

Today was a productive day and I was able to incorporate special things for almost everyone. I think it helps to have that mindset and the actions just naturally follow.

Davy is crazy about lemon things. He’s a true product of my mother’s family. We all love lemon pies, cakes and such. So this morning, I made lemon-poppy seed muffins. I used dried lemon peel and fresh lemon juice. James wasn’t too crazy about it but it won’t hurt him to know that the world doesn’t revolve around him. I doubt many families share the exact same tastes. We all like different things. I don’t want to become a short-order cook but I think it shows we care when we make something to eat with one person in mind. Like the coconut macaroons I made at Christmas for my grandfather, the german chocolate cake for Mike and the lemon-poppy seed muffins for Davy.

When Matt and Davy got back from speech therapy, I had Matt to do a little experiment. I asked him if he could put a towel in a pot of water without getting it wet. He asked for Mike’s help and Mike grabbed a ziploc bag. Clever! I put the towel in a jar and turned it upside down and immersed in the water. The towel stayed dry. Even Mike said, “Cool!” During lunch, Matt explained to the other children how the air prevented the water from reaching the towel at lunch time. I was really proud that he really understood the result of the experiment.

After lunch, I helped Abby get started with a cross-stitched Christmas ornament. She did really well for just starting out. Mama has been teaching her to crochet as well and she loves being a part of the big-girl activities.

For supper, James helped with mixing the ingredients for tortillas. Abby helped him get his snowman apron on. I’m gonna need to finish the snowman aprons for the rest of the children. And figure out a pattern for a non-Christmas apron. But for right now, James just wants to cook and he doesn’t mind snowmen on his apron.

Even I was treated with a special thing. While I was taking Davy to a chiropractor appointment and picking up a few items for date night as a surprise for Mike, he was back home organizing the children to pick up in the living room and bedrooms. I came home to freshly vacuumed floors. What a treat!

Tonight’s a date night with a Scrabble game and fresh fruit and pretzels to dip in white chocolate. It’s been a crazy beginning to the year with freezing temps, frozen pipes, an ER trip, etc. It’s also been a productive beginning. I completed 7 projects last week plus 6 granny squares. I’m working on project number two. I do think we need a night to unwind from all the activity.

Tomorrow first thing, Andrew gets a little one-on-one time. And stay tuned for Wednesday, it’ll have a pirate theme. Take care, ya’ll
